Norfolk Skies is a series of 24 minimalist paintings in oil on canvas. In a region of exceptional beauty and unique geographic character, the extraordinary low horizons of North Norfolk create an experience that is always dominated by sky. The maritime climate, where Nordic weather systems skim across the coast and collide with the edge of the Gulf Stream, creates an unending spectacle of the subtlest light and movement. Norfolk Skies is my first homage to the joy and excitement of the Norfolk experience. Each of the paintings in this exhibition seeks to capture a moment in a day: the play of sunlight through the clouds, the setting sun in the west lighting up the air, or the sombre shades beneath heavy rain. With minimal resources, these gestural oil paintings seek to discover images that evoke the ephemeral moments of colour, shifting form and elusive focus of the sky.
