Family Fireworks

Why are family relationships so complex? Family dynamics are complicated and perplexing. Each one of is made up of a unique energy force, embodying different degrees of passion & rage; kindness & indulgence; determination & recklessness; empathy & narcissism; love & hate.... We are like small asteroids floating around in space, randomly colliding and sporadically morphing into balls of fire that resemble shooting stars. Sparks fly upon collision, the outcome electrifying, at times explosive. Vibrant new colours emerge from continuous chemical reactions, whilst personalities and relationships evolve constantly. The spontaneous combustion of stunning hues and exhilarating tempos can occasionally create a spectacular visual and acoustic performance, much like a well choreographed fireworks display, which looks and sounds better from a distance. Too close and the colours are blinding, the music deafening. The complexity of family relationships due to contrasting characters and power struggles baffles me increasingly. I find myself frequently asking, “how and why do we have such different personalities? are we really from the same parents?? And yet we have an unmistakable physical resemblance!” Painting by Sabrina Kee-Kitney Painted June 2020 during lockdown
