"Black Rose": Black Rose refers to the girl as well as the black flower at her feet. Behind her, Death rides into town on a potato beetle. He has taken the little goose soul. The bleeding goose dangles from the girl's neck, a knife lies on the ground. Excitedly, the other geese chatter and flutter around. The girl will sell the dead goose to the approaching young man in his soapbox. A curious bee crosses his path. In the background, on the gable of a church-like building, in a rose bush, Jesus stands watching this scene.
