The rigid components are basically sound but the elastic jointing material is slowly deteriorating and crumbling. Fires burn haphazardly through these compounds, suddenly flaring up, dying, and reigniting elsewhere with no warning. The decorative elements have suffered with age and are slowly showing signs of wear, albeit not as advanced as some.
