Was it a river when he didn't know it existed? He has been sitting on the bank of a waterway that he never visited before. The water was not still, it appeared to be a moving canvas to him. He could see the bubbles, meaning there were lives underneath. The sunlight and the reflection of the leaves of the hanging branches created sensational colour arrangements.
