To begin this painting, I layered squares and rectangles of handmade papers with Gesso to the surface of the canvas to create a textured, grid-like pattern. Then, once this layer dried, I drew in the bold, foreshortened shape of a horse, keeping in mind that my goal was to integrate the form of the horse with the pattern I created with the layer of papers. From there, I added contrasting colors and used white highlights to suggest light bouncing around and deep blue for the shadows while maintaining a visually balanced composition. The contrasting colors and collage of textures helped me to achieve the 3D effect for this statement piece.
